Water Testing in San Antonio, TX: Know What's in Your Water

Your family’s health starts with the water flowing from your taps — but looks can be deceiving. Water can appear perfectly clear while harboring bacteria, heavy metals, or chemical contaminants that pose serious health risks. At Gatewood Superior Inspections, we provide professional, certified water quality testing for homeowners, home buyers, and real estate professionals throughout San Antonio, TX and surrounding communities. Whether your home is on city water or a private well, our lab-certified results give you the answers you need — and the peace of mind you deserve.

Why Water Testing Matters in San Antonio

San Antonio is home to one of the most unique water systems in the country. The Edwards Aquifer — a vast underground limestone reservoir spanning south-central Texas — has historically been the city’s primary water source, currently supplying approximately 50–60% of San Antonio’s drinking water. SAWS draws the remainder from the Carrizo, Trinity, Wilcox, and other aquifers, as well as surface water from Canyon Lake. While aquifer-sourced water starts out remarkably pure, that doesn’t mean every drop reaching your tap is problem-free.

From aging distribution pipes and disinfection byproducts to unregulated private wells in rural communities like Adkins, La Vernia, Sutherland Springs, and Floresville, water quality concerns are real and local. The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) monitors and treats municipal water, but Texas regulations only require testing at the treatment facility — not at your individual tap, where contamination most commonly occurs.

If you own a private well, there is no municipal oversight at all. You are solely responsible for the safety of your water supply. Regular testing is the only way to know for certain what your family is drinking, cooking with, and bathing in.

Water Testing Is the Right Choice If:

San Antonio's Water: What the Data Actually Says

San Antonio’s municipal water meets all federal and state standards — but “compliant” doesn’t always mean “clean at your tap.” Here’s what independent testing and official 2024–2025 water quality reports reveal about South Texas water:

The Edwards Aquifer: Pure Source, Complex Journey

The Edwards Aquifer is one of the most productive and naturally pure groundwater systems in the nation. Rainwater filters through layers of fractured limestone over thousands of years before reaching the aquifer, producing water so clean it typically requires only chlorination before distribution. SAWS received no water quality violations in 2024 and consistently ranks among the best in Texas.

That said, the water’s journey from the aquifer to your faucet passes through miles of distribution pipes, and conditions can change along the way.

Known Contaminants Found in San Antonio Area Water

Even with excellent source water, San Antonio homeowners should be aware of these documented concerns:

  • Chromium-6 (Hexavalent Chromium) Independent testing has found chromium-6 levels in San Antonio’s water at approximately 136 parts per trillion — nearly seven times higher than California’s public health goal of 20 ppt. There is currently no federal drinking water standard specifically for chromium-6, making independent testing an important safeguard. The substance has been linked to increased cancer risk with long-term exposure.
  • Lead Lead enters tap water primarily through aging service lines and interior plumbing — not from the source water itself. SAWS testing in 2024 found lead at 3.25 ppb at the 90th percentile. While this is below the EPA’s action level of 15 ppb, health experts note there is no safe level of lead exposure for children.
  • Disinfection Byproducts (TTHMs) When chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic material in water, it forms trihalomethanes (TTHMs) including chloroform and bromodichloromethane. SAWS results show TTHM levels that exceed Environmental Working Group (EWG) recommendations, though they remain within EPA legal limits.
  • Hard Water / High Mineral Content San Antonio’s water is notoriously hard. The limestone aquifer naturally deposits calcium and magnesium into the water supply. Hard water isn’t a health hazard, but it damages pipes, water heaters, and appliances over time — and many families choose treatment for comfort and cost savings.
  • Nitrates Elevated nitrates have been documented in parts of the Edwards Aquifer, with contributing factors that include agricultural runoff, septic systems, and — per recent research — quarry blasting operations using ammonium nitrate compounds. Nitrates are especially dangerous for infants under six months old.
  • Bacteria (E. coli, Coliform, Legionella) In 2025, E. coli was detected in a raw water well in the SAWS system before it could reach customers. Private well owners in semi-rural areas around New Braunfels, Seguin, Helotes, and Boerne face ongoing bacterial risks from nearby livestock operations and septic systems.
  • PFAS (“Forever Chemicals”) PFAS levels in San Antonio’s main system are generally low, but at least one Castle Hills well has tested at EPA limits. For private wells, PFAS testing is not routine unless specifically requested.

Private Well Water in the San Antonio Region

Homeowners in communities like Marion, Elmendorf, Adkins, Stockdale, La Vernia, and Sutherland Springs often rely on private wells. These wells draw water from the Edwards, Trinity, or other local aquifers and are subject to no ongoing government testing or oversight. Contamination sources unique to these rural and semi-rural areas include:

  • Septic system leachate

  • Livestock and agricultural operations

  • Pesticide and herbicide runoff

  • Naturally occurring arsenic, iron, and manganese

  • Nearby quarry or oil and gas activity

Without routine testing, well contamination can go undetected for years.

Gatewood Superior Inspections Water Testing Services

At Gatewood Superior Inspections, we offer comprehensive water quality testing backed by certified laboratory analysis. Our testing services use advanced sampling techniques and strict chain-of-custody protocols to ensure your samples are secure and uncontaminated. We provide detailed, easy-to-understand reports that support informed decision-making and meet VA, FHA, and mortgage lender requirements.

Municipal / City Water Testing

On city water? Don’t assume you’re in the clear. Treatment happens at the facility — not in your pipes. Our municipal water testing is ideal for:

  • Homeowners in San Antonio, Alamo Heights, Helotes, Schertz, Cibolo, and other city-served communities

  • Buyers purchasing older homes where pipes may leach lead or other metals

  • Families with health concerns who want verified results, not assumptions

  • Homeowners experiencing changes in water taste, odor, or color

We test for chlorine and chloramine levels, disinfection byproducts, lead and heavy metals, total dissolved solids (TDS), bacteria, pH, and hardness — giving you a complete picture of what’s actually coming out of your tap.

Private Well Water Testing

Private well owners carry full responsibility for their water’s safety. Gatewood’s well water testing service includes both a physical inspection of the well equipment and a certified laboratory analysis of the water itself. We test for:

  • Total Coliform and E. coli bacteria

  • Nitrates and Nitrites

  • Lead and heavy metals

  • pH and water hardness

  • Iron and Manganese

  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

  • Pesticides and Herbicides

  • Arsenic (on request)

  • PFAS (on request)

The EPA recommends testing private well water at least once per year for bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH — and any time you notice a change in water quality, experience flooding near the well, or are buying or selling a property.

Real Estate / Pre-Purchase Water Testing

Buying a home is one of the largest investments you’ll ever make. When that home has a private well — or is located in an area with known water quality concerns — a certified water test is not optional. It’s essential.

Gatewood’s pre-purchase water testing:

  • Meets VA and FHA loan certification requirements

  • Produces certified lab results accepted by lenders and underwriters

  • Protects buyers from costly surprises after closing

  • Gives sellers a verified water quality report that strengthens their listing

  • Integrates seamlessly with your home inspection appointment

We serve military families PCSing to the San Antonio area who are purchasing homes sight unseen. We know the urgency of your timeline — and we deliver.

Routine / Maintenance Water Testing

Even if your water tested clean last year, conditions can change. New agricultural operations nearby, aging pipes, shifting seasonal patterns, and flooding events can all affect water quality. We recommend annual testing for all homes on private wells and periodic testing for city-water homes — especially those in older neighborhoods or near agricultural activity.

What We Test For

How the Water Testing Process Works

Step 1: Schedule Your Water Test

Book online or call us. We’ll confirm your appointment and let you know if there are any special preparation instructions (such as not running water for a period before sample collection).

Step 2: On-Site Sample Collection

A Gatewood inspector visits your property and collects water samples using certified, chain-of-custody protocols. Proper collection is critical to accurate results — this is not something a home test kit can replicate.

Step 3: Certified Laboratory Analysis

Your samples are submitted to a certified laboratory for analysis. Results are typically returned within 3–5 business days, depending on the tests ordered.

Step 4: Report & Consultation

You’ll receive a detailed, easy-to-read report that explains every finding in plain language — not lab jargon. If any contaminants are detected, we’ll walk you through what it means, the health implications, and recommended next steps for treatment or follow-up.

Signs You May Need Water Testing Right Now

Don’t wait for a health scare to test your water. Contact Gatewood Superior Inspections if you notice any of the following:

  • Unusual taste or odor: Rotten egg smell may indicate hydrogen sulfide; a strong chlorine taste may suggest high disinfectant levels; metallic taste often points to lead or iron.

  • Discoloration: Yellow, brown, or cloudy water can indicate rust, sediment, or bacteria.

  • Scale and staining: White deposits on fixtures and appliances are signs of hard water and mineral buildup.

  • Unexplained gastrointestinal illness: Recurring stomach issues in your household that can’t be explained by other causes.

  • You just moved into a home with a well:  Never assume a well is safe without current, certified test results.

  • Recent flooding or heavy rain: Flood events can contaminate wells quickly and silently.

  • Nearby agricultural activity or development: Construction, farming, and quarrying can all impact groundwater quality in South Texas.

  • Your home was built before 1986: Older homes may have lead solder in plumbing joints or galvanized steel pipes that degrade over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water testing costs vary depending on the number of contaminants tested and whether you’re on city water or a private well. Basic coliform/bacteria tests are more affordable, while comprehensive panels covering lead, nitrates, VOCs, and more are priced accordingly. We believe in transparency; click here for a full breakdown of our pricing. We offer bundled discounts when water testing is combined with a home inspection.

San Antonio’s municipal water met all federal and state standards in 2024 and received no violations from SAWS. However, certain contaminants — including chromium-6, lead from older pipes, and disinfection byproducts — have been detected at levels that exceed more conservative health guidelines. Whether on city water or a well, independent testing tells you what’s actually coming out of your tap.

Yes, especially if your home is older (pre-1986), you’ve noticed changes in taste or odor, or you have children, elderly family members, or immunocompromised individuals at home. Municipal compliance testing happens at the treatment plant — not at your faucet. Lead, for example, almost always enters water through household plumbing, not the source.

The EPA recommends testing private well water at least once per year for bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. Additional testing for other contaminants — pesticides, VOCs, heavy metals — is recommended every three to five years, or whenever local conditions change such as flooding, nearby construction, or new agricultural activity nearby.

The most frequently detected issues in San Antonio area well water include coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrates, hard water minerals (calcium and magnesium), iron, manganese, and pH imbalances. In areas near agricultural land or older industrial sites, pesticides, VOCs, and arsenic may also be present.

Home test kits can screen for a few basic parameters, but they don’t provide the accuracy, completeness, or legal standing of a certified laboratory analysis. For real estate transactions, VA/FHA loans, or any genuine health concern, certified testing by a professional inspector is required. Home kits are no substitute.

Your Gatewood report will explain exactly what was detected, at what levels, what the health implications are, and what treatment options are available. Common remedies include water filtration systems, reverse osmosis, UV disinfection, water softeners, or well remediation. We help you understand your options — we don’t just hand you a confusing lab printout.

Yes. Lead testing is included in our standard well water panel and is available as an add-on for municipal water testing. Given San Antonio’s aging housing stock, we strongly recommend lead testing for any home built before 1986.

Yes, if the home being financed has a private well, VA and FHA guidelines require a certified water test before closing. The results must show the water is free of coliform bacteria and meets minimum safety standards. Gatewood’s certified lab results are formatted to satisfy these requirements.

Yes. Water testing in Texas should comply with standards set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Professional water testing services follow these state regulations to ensure accurate, reliable results that meet Texas requirements.

On-site sample collection typically takes 20–30 minutes. Lab analysis takes approximately 3–5 business days, after which you receive your full written report. Rush options may be available — call us to ask.
